Mumbai Indians (MI) have a strong squad consisting of 25 players, as they look to win their third consecutive IPL title. The franchise lifted their fifth title last season, as they defeated Delhi Capitals in the finals. Mumbai have a settled side going into the 2021 season as they are expected to go in with almost the same side that played the finals against Delhi.

Aditya Tare has been one of the unfortunate players in the MI squad who has remained on the bench since the past three seasons, with Ishan Kishan getting the nod over him. James Neesham, Adam Milne and Marco Jensen are among the new overseas additions to the squad and they will likely be given only a few opportunities. Chris Lynn is expected to play a few matches early on in the tournament, as Quinton de Kock is on international duty.

Dhawal Kulkarni

Dhawal Kulkarni played just one match last season where he failed to pick up a wicket. The Indian pacer has played 91 matches in his IPL career so far, picking up 86 wickets. His best season in terms of wickets came in 2016, when he picked up 18 wickets for Gujarat Lions. However, he has struggled to break into the playing eleven ever since.

Kulkarni is expected to remain on the bench for the 2021 season, unless there are a few injuries in the MI squad. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult are expected to lead the lines for the franchise with either of Adam Milne or Nathan Coulter Nile being the third pacer. With Hardik Pandya expected to bowl this season, this limits the opportunities for Dhawal Kulkarni.

Jayant Yadav

Jayant Yadav who was given the nod over Chris Lynn in the finals against Delhi Capitals last season is expected to have limited opportunities this season. He was impressive in the finals as he picked up the priced wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. He played two matches last season, picking up one wicket at an average of 43 and an economy of 6.14.

Mumbai Indians bought the former Chennai Super Kings spinner, Piyush Chawla in the auction who joins the likes of Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya. Chahar recently made his T20I debut for India against England and is expected to lead the spin bowling attack alongside Krunal Pandya. This means that Jayant Yadav is well below in the pecking order at Mumbai Indians and is expected to remain on the bench for the majority of the season.

Saurabh Tiwary

Another Indian player who might not get enough opportunities this season is Saurabh Tiwary who played seven matches for the franchise last season, scoring 103 runs at an average of 20.60. Ishan Kishan established himself as a regular in the Mumbai Indians team which saw Saurabh Tiwary fighting for his place in the team.

Mumbai’s middle-order was resolute throughout the last season with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kisha, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard piling on the runs. In this case, there is no spot for Tiwary in the eleven, and he will unfortunate to miss out this season. The left-hander’s best season in IPL came way back in 2010 when he amassed 419 runs in 16 innings at an average of 29.92.
