They have worked together in just two films – Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013). And despite both the films being big hits – actors Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone haven’t teamed up after that. Asked why they didn’t think of doing more films together, Deepika says, “That’s what I keep asking everyone (laughs). But on a serious note, I think it’s not about coming together for a film, just for the heck of it. It’s important that the director who casts us eventually does justice to the film and the fact that he has cast us (together) and how he wants to use us… I think it has to be special.”

Interestingly, while Ranbir believes that their chemistry is “very good”, he admits that a lot depends on their next film together, that is directed by Imtiaz Ali. “God forbid, if people don’t like us together in our new film, then they might think, ‘maybe our chemistry isn’t that good.’ So, a lot depends on this film. But I am really happy that people have liked us as an on-screen pair and I hope they continue to,” says Ranbir.
While Deepika has done two films with ex-beau Ranbir, she is currently shooting with her rumoured boyfriend Ranveer Singh for Bajirao Mastani. But she refuses to compare the two as actors. “Do we always have to pick one over the other? No, I don’t think so. It depends on the kind of films and the way characters are written. I think it depends on what a director can extract from two actors who he has cast,” she says. For his part, Ranbir says that he has learnt a lot from Dippy. “We worked together after five years and to see her grow so much as an actor is really encouraging and inspiring. I have learnt a lot from her,” he adds.
