Ajinkya Rahane led India to a memorable series win against Australia in Australia in a recent Test series. India came back from behind to win the series 2-1 by achieving a historic win at The Gabba. The young Indian team became the first team to beat Australia at that venue after nearly 32 years. Ajinkya Rahane was very much the architect of the series win in the way he led the team after India’s shameful defeat in the first Test in Adelaide.
Rahane spoke to Indian Express in a lengthy interview about the Test series win and answered several questions. In the process, he pinpointed one moment from the many in the tour which stood out for him. The Indian Test vice-captain said how the mood in the camp was after India’s 36-all out story in the first Test.
“In the Adelaide match, I was there as vice-captain and player. After the loss, we were all disappointed. We didn’t know what had happened. Within an hour, the game changed completely” said Rahane.
He then spoke about the moment which he fondly remembers. He spoke about how the players responded to the first team meeting he addressed after the Adelaide Test. He said players were unsure about making a comeback in the series post the defeat in Adelaide.

Team Meeting Before Melbourne Test Was Special: Ajinkya Rahane
“(I will always remember) our team meeting in Melbourne, after the Adelaide Test match when I actually took over. It (the turnaround) started from there, the vibe. We were not sure what was going to happen in the series, but everyone got together, we were determined to do well. That moment when we got together was special,” said Rahane.
Ajinkya Rahane running out Virat Kohli in the first Test was the highlight of the Test match. He too was out moments after running out his skipper in the first Test. Rahane scored a match-winning century in the second Test in Melbourne which India won. That was the start of India’s comeback in the series.
Ajinkya Rahane concluded by saying that now with Virat Kohli back as captain, he is focusing on the upcoming series against England and is happy to play the role as Kohli’s deputy.
England play India between February 5 to March 28 for four Tests, five T20Is, and three ODIs. Chennai will host the first two Tests. The final two Tests will be played at the newly built stadium in Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad will host the T20I series followed by Pune for the ODI series.
