In the wake of the disgraceful racism incident at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Jay Shah has said Cricket Australia and the BCCI stand together against racism. The BCCI secretary also said that such acts of discrimination will not be tolerated by the cricket boards. He also said Cricket Australia has promised the BCCI strict action against offenders after a group of spectators at the Sydney Cricket Ground were accused to have racially abused Mohammed Siraj.

On Sunday, Siraj faced abuse from a section of the crowd and was quick to alert umpires about the incident. Following the incident, the play was held up for 10 minutes on Sunday as umpires and authorities took action.  The India players and Australia captain Tim Paine joined India players in a huddle around the umpires after which security officials at the Sydney Cricket Ground evicted 6 supporters.

According to reports from India Today, Mohammed Siraj was called ‘brown monkey’ when he was fielding at the boundary ropes on the fourth day of the Test. He had faced the abuse on Saturday too. Fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah was abused too. After that incident, the Indian team had filed a formal complaint with match referee David Boon.

“Racism has no place in our great sport or in any walk of society. I’ve spoken to @CricketAus and they have ensured strict action against the offenders. @BCCI and Cricket Australia stand together. These acts of discrimination will not be tolerated,” Jay Shah wrote while tagging BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and treasurer Arun Dhumal in his social media post.

Earlier in the day, Cricket Australia issued an apology to the visiting team and promised action against the offenders after the incident. In a statement released on Sunday, CA said it has launched an investigation into the incident along with New South Wales Police.

“While we await the outcome of the investigation by NSW Police, CA has launched its own enquiry into the matter,” the board said.

“The BCCI has taken up the matter strongly with the concerned authority. BCCI Secretary, Mr Jay Shah, spoke to Cricket Australia Chairman Mr Earl Eddings and expressed his concern over the incidents and both agreed that action needs to be taken against the offenders to send out a strong message that racism and discrimination do not have a place in our great sport and in any walk of society,” BCCI treasurer Mr Arun Singh Dhumal said.
