IPL 2021 – England Cricketers in IPL 2021: ECB or England’s director of cricket Ashley Giles has warned that national team could lose their best players if not allowed to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in future. England stars could quit playing for their country if their path to participating in the IPL is blocked, Giles warned.

IPL 2021: New Zealand tests or IPL 2021 – England Cricket in a fix?

England players competing in the IPL could miss the two-match Test series against New Zealand in June if their IPL sides are involved in the latter parts of the competition, including the play-offs, eliminator and final. But ECB’s Ashley Giles speaking on the Tuffers & Vaughan show insisted a confrontational policy in the long-term over their stars participation in the tournament would not be beneficial.

‘Right now I think our players love playing for England,’ he said.

‘I don’t want that to be a kiss of death. I think we have to understand that it could be a danger in the future.

‘We don’t particularly want to go toe-to-toe with our players over IPL participation in the long run because we may face losing some of our best players.’

Giles also added that England players had signed contracts with their respective franchises which guarantees their full availability for this year’s tournament, before the series against Kane Williamson’s men had been announced.

‘That window was clear for anyone who got to the later stages of IPL to play in the whole competition,’ Giles said. ‘That is how their contracts were agreed. We don’t think it is right to renege on that agreement.’

IPL 2021: New Zealand tests or IPL 2021 – England Cricket in a fix?

13 England players have been selected by six of the eight IPL franchises, Rajasthan having the biggest contingent with Jofra Archer and Liam Livingstone being picked up alongside Buttler and Stokes. This year’s IPL begins on 9 April, before the play-offs start on 25 May, which precedes the final on 30 May.

The first of England’s two Test matches against No 2 ranked New Zealand starts just three days later on 2 June at Lord’s. It is clear that England IPL bound players will miss the 1st test and ECB as Giles has suggested instead of getting into confrontation should live with it.
