While giving a joint interview to PEOPLE, Ellen got candid about how she was able to lean on her wife for support during the workplace misconduct controversy last summer.
‘It broke my heart. I could not have gone through everything that I went through without her. It was such a horrible time in my life, and she was a rock. She kept me going and she tried to help me put things in perspective,’ Ellen told the news outlet.
And Portia was not even supportive just in private! She defended her wife on social media as well.

Then, Portia went on to talk about the very special connection she shares with Ellen.
‘We’ve grown together as a couple, and really consider each other and put our relationship first,’ she told PEOPLE.
Ellen explained that ‘By doing that you become a lot more solid. I cannot imagine spending time with anybody but her. We think the same things, we say the same things at the same time, finish each other’s sandwiches—no, sentences. We are in a rhythm that’s easy.’
At some point during the interview, Ellen raved about Portia, sharing the things she loves about her.
‘To start superficially, I love the way she looks, love her brain; she’s smart. That is really important. She is strong, confident. She is really funny. And she’s a good dresser and dancer. She is learning to cook.’
Portia gave her some love right back, gushing that Ellen is ‘the kindest, most generous, most loving, loyal, trustworthy person I’ve ever known. She is a very special human being. Some of it rubs off on me.’
