England captain Eoin Morgan has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against India, the England and Wales Board (ECB) confirmed on March 25, 2021. Morgan had led England in the recent T20I series comprising of the five matches against India, which the visitors lost 2-3.
Eoin Morgan had split the webbing between his thumb and index finger and had required stitches during the first match on Tuesday. However, Morgan was able to bat for during England’s chase of 317 runs. The ECB also named the captain for the remainder of the series and gave an update on Sam Billings as well.
Jos Buttler To Lead England In Remaining Two ODIs In Absence Of Eoin Morgan
The ECB further mentioned that in place of Eoin Morgan, wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler will captain England in the last two one-day internationals to be played on March 26 and 28. The England captain underwent a fielding drill at the start of training at the MCA Stadium on Thursday and afterward declared himself unfit.
“I had the hand re-dressed before the start of training today but it quickly became apparent that I found myself protecting the injury and getting into the wrong positions to catch the ball. There’s nowhere to hide on the field in international cricket these days, especially in limited-over formats so it didn’t require any great thought to make myself unavailable,” Morgan said.
“It was a freak injury and it’s extremely frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s now just a case of letting the cut heal. I have every confidence in Jos and the rest of the squad coping without me,” he added.
Sam Billings Ruled Out Of Second ODI; Liam Livingstone To Make His ODI Debut
The media release also shed light on the condition of Sam billings, who had bruised his collar bone during India’s innings and didn’t field for the remainder of innings but came out to bat.
Sam Billings will be unavailable for game two of the series on Friday, with a decision on his availability for Sunday’s final match to be taken in due course, ECB said. Billings didn’t train on Thursday, as the injury remained sore.
Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone will make his ODI debut for England on Friday, March 26 and Dawid Malan, who was with the squad as a cover, has been drafted into the squad and is available for selection in the playing XI.
