Five COVID-19 patients killed as fire breaks out at Rajkot hospital

In a gruesome incident, five COVID-19 patients were killed and six others injured as a fire broke out in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the private hospital in Rajkot early on Friday. The injured have been shifted to another hospital there.

The fire gutted the ICU ward in Uday Shivanand hospital, which was designated COVID-19 hospital in the city.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani expressed grief over the incident, announced ₹4 lakh ex gratia to next of kin of those who died in the incident and also ordered a high-level enquiry into the incident.

According to Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) fire division, there were 33 patients in the hospital, including 11 patients in the ICU. Three of them died on the spot while remaining 30 patients were rescued and shifted them to another hospital in ambulances with the help of doctors. Two more patients succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment. The fire was put out within 30 to 45 minutes.

According to sources, the fire could have been started by electric short-circuit.

In August, eight COVID-19 patients were killed after a fire broke out on the top floor of a four-storey private hospital in Ahmedabad.
