With the NFL season coming to a close, fans will soon be able to turn to Netflix to get their football fill — though it will be on a smaller field.
On Jan. 29, the streaming company will debut a four-part docuseries, We Are: The Brooklyn Saints, which follows a youth football program by the same name.
The team is made up of 7- to 13-year-old boys who form a bond with each other through football. The first trailer for the series debuted on Thursday and gives an intimate look into how the Saints coaching staff uses the lessons of the field to teach their players about life.
“Through intimate verité footage, the series immerses us in the world of Brooklyn Saints football and their community, chronicling the personal stories of the driven young athletes, as well as the support system of coaches and parents rallying behind them,” Netflix said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Over the course of a season, we witness the Saints’ power on and off the field, as they celebrate victories and overcome losses, both personal and athletic,” it continued. “Raw and authentic, the pressures of adolescence unfolds in real-time as the boys work to propel themselves to a brighter future.”
Emmy-award winning filmmaker Rudy Valdez, who serves as director and executive producer of the series, says he was inspired to shine a light on the team to give them an opportunity to be “heroes.”

“Growing up, I rarely saw people who looked like me as the heroes of their own stories,” Valdez said in a statement. “This deeply impacted me as a person, and now as a filmmaker.”
“With We Are: The Brooklyn Saints, there was an opportunity to feature the lives of our main characters with agency and from their own perspective; rather than the one often assumed for them,” Valdez added. “This series exists for them and those who will watch it with the hope that a new generation will never have to wonder what it looks like to be the hero of your own story.”

Ron Howard and Brian Grazer also serve as executive producers of the film.
Valdez directed the 2018 HBO documentary, The Sentence, which told the story of his sister and the 15-year mandatory sentence she received for charges related to her deceased ex-boyfriend’s crimes.
