Hannity says it’s time for new GOP leadership after McConnell condemns Trump for inciting insurrection

Sean Hannity went after top Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and John Thune during his Hannity monologue Monday night for their condemnation of former President Donald Trump following the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. Neither Thune nor McConnell were among the seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump at the impeachment trial, but just moments after Trump was acquitted, McConnell took to the Senate floor where he said that Trump actually was undoubtedly responsible for the insurrection.

“There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it,” McConnell said in his speech. “The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president. And having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories, and reckless hyperbole, which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth.”

“This is the question the Republicans are now gonna have to ask themselves tonight,” Hannity said. “Where was John Thune and Mitch Mcconnell fighting against the biggest abuse of power and corruption scandal in our history with Operation Crossfire Hurricane? They were missing in action.”

As McConnell, along with dozens of other Republicans, faces backlash for daring to defy Trump, Hannity called for new GOP leadership in the Senate. Hannity also questioned when McConnell was going to make a similar speech condemning Democrats for something they haven’t actually done.

“When is he going to give a speech on the Senate floor and hold those Democrats accountable for their incitement of insurrection and their insurrection-like language?” Hannity asked. “The time is now coming for new leadership in the U.S. Senate.”

Hannity airs weeknights at 9 p.m. on Fox News Channel.
