Meteorological Department has predicted more snowfall in the coming days. No flight could take off or arrive at the Srinagar international airport due to poor visibility. It was highly unlikely for any operation to take place at the airport in wake of the snowfall.

Jammu-Srinagar highway and Mughal road, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of country remained closed today due to heavy snow accumulation and mud slides at several places. Jawarhar tunnel had snow depths of around 4 feet. Beacon authorities stopped the snow clearance due to continued snowfall.

Mughal Road, which connects the Kashmir with Poonch district also remained closed for vehicular traffic due to heavy snowfall in the region. Srinagar-Leh highway has been officially closed till April 2021.

MET officials in Srinagar said that Srinagar received 18 inches of snow in the last 24 hours while Qazigund, the entry town of Kashmir, recorded the highest depth in the plains across Valley at 4.5 feet.

Pahalgam, the famous tourist destination and Kokernag recorded 2.5 and 2 feet of fresh snow respectively. Gulmarg, the skiing resort accumulated 3 feet of fresh snowfall in the last 24 hours while Tangmarg received 2 feet fresh snow.

Many main roads and almost all interior lanes and link roads are still blocked with snow. Administration is working round the clock to clear snow from the roads. The snowfall has also led to disruptions of power and water supply at many places in Kashmir especially in remote areas.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.8 degree Celsius, while mercury settled at minus 1.1 degree Celsius in Pahalgam, minus 4.0 degree Celsius in Gulmarg, Qazigund minus 0.2 degree Celsius, Kupwara minus 0.7 degree Celsius while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.7 degree Celsius, MET official said.

MET has predicted more snow till January 6 in Kashmir and after that weather will improve but temperatures will fall and the cold winds will intensity the cold wave not only in Kashmir but across North India.
