‘Hip Hop Uncovered’: FX Drops Trailer For Six-Part Doc Series

The stories of hip hop power brokers Big U, Deb Antney, Bimmy, Trick Trick and Haitian Jack are being told in FX’s upcoming doc series Hip Hop Uncovered.

You can watch the trailer above for the series, which launches on FX on Friday February 12 at 10pm before dropping on FX on Hulu the following day.

Coming from executive producer Malcolm Spellman, who worked on Empire, and Lightbox, the company behind Whitney and the upcoming Tina Turner documentary, the series will look at this dying breed of power brokers who operate from the shadows of hip hop.

It will tell the stories of gang leader-turned-community activist Eugene “Big U” Henley, who has worked with artists including Nipsey Hussle, Deb Antney, the founder of Mizay Entertainment who has worked with Gucci Mane and Nicki Minaj and is the mother of Waka Flocka Flame, James ‘Bimmy’ Antney, who has worked with LL Cool J and Slick Rick and former member of the Supreme Team, Christian ‘Trick Trick’ Mathis, a founder of The Good Sqwad who has worked with Eminem and Jacques ‘Haitian Jack’ Agnant, who had relationships with the likes of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.

The series will feature interviews with stars including Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

Set against 40 years of music history, the series takes a deep dive into the paradox of America’s criminalization of the genre and its fascination with the street culture that created it and still exists within it. Instead of telling the story of hip hop from the top down, Hip Hop Uncovered tells the story from the streets up, as it reveals the untold story of how America’s streets helped shape hip hop culture from an expression of survival and defiance into music’s most dominant genre.

Hip Hop Uncovered is executive produced by Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn from Lightbox along with Malcolm Spellman, Rashidi Natara Harper, Eugene “Big U” Henley, Jimmy “JimBob” Chris, Douglas Banker and BJ Levin, and is co-executive produced by Stephen Neely.
