Riding on Marnus Labuschagnne’s century, hosts Australia scored 274 for five on the opening day of the fourth and final Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. Australia skipper Tim Paine was unbeaten on 38 runs, while all-rounder Cameron Green was batting on 28 runs. Marred by a hosts of injuries, the visitors were forced to field one of the most inexperienced bowling line-ups ever. Despite that, India got off to a brilliant start as Mohammed Siraj, just playing his second Test, dismissed opener David Warner in the first over for just one run. Shardul Thakur, also playing his second Test match, had a brilliant start as he got rid of opener Marcus Harris on his very first delivery for his maiden Test wicket. Labuschagne and Steve Smith stitched a solid partnership for the third wicket as hosts lost only two wickets in the opening session. Washington Sundar had a dream debut as he got rid of Australia’s most dangerous batsman Steve Smith as his maiden Test wicket for 36 runs. After that, Labuschagne and Matthew Wade took control of the innings as Australia reached 200. T Natarajan took two wickets in quick intervals, removing both Wade and Labuschagne with his short-pitch deliveries, to bring India back in the game. Paine and Green negated the second new ball with great aplomb to put Australia in driver’s seat. (LIVE SCORECARD)
