The hosts India started the second Test strongly after opener Rohit Sharma and Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane performed strongly with their bats on the opening day of this match.

At morning, Indian captain Virat Kohli won the crucial toss and chose to bat first. At the end of the day, India scored 300/6.

England got the strong start as Olly Stone picked up the wicket of opener Shubman Gill (0) on the ninth ball of the day while the Indian team didn’t open their scoreboard yet. But then another opener Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara controlled the innings soon where Rohit batted in his familiar fashion.

Just in the 15th over of the day, Rohit completed his half-century in 47 balls. Rohit and Pujara put the crucial 85 runs partnership for the second wicket but Jack Leach broke that partnership as he dismissed Pujara for 21 runs. Pujara was caught out at slip in the 21st over.

In the very next over, Moeen Ali brilliantly bowled the Indian captain Virat Kohli for a duck. Even Kohli was totally surprised as he was clueless during that dismissal time. At lunch, India scored 106/3, where Rohit scored 80 not out.

India totally controlled the second session of the day as they didn’t lose any further wicket in that session. Rohit and Ajinkya Rahane helped the hosts to go for the good first innings total.

Both these batsmen continued that controlled momentum in the beginning of the third session. While Rahane completed his half-century in 104 balls, Rohit reached the 150 runs mark in 208 balls. After the 162 runs partnership for the fourth wicket, Jack Leach once again brought the breakthrough as he now dismissed Rohit for 161 runs off 231 balls (18 fours and 2 sixes).

While Rohit was out in the 73rd over, Rahane was dismissed in the 76th over as Moeen Ali bowled him for 67 runs off 149 balls (9 fours).

Wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin put the 35 runs partnership for the sixth wicket. Finally, captain Joe Root dismissed Ashwin (13) with the old ball.

England took their new ball in the 86th over but didn’t get another wicket for the day. At the stumps of the day, Rishabh Pant scored 33 not out while Test debutant Axar Patel scored 5 not out.

Brief Scores: India – 300/6 (Rohit Sharma 161, Ajinkya Rahane 67; Jack Leach 2/78)
