India vs England 2021: David Lloyd Terms The Pitch At Chepauk As An 'Embarrasment'

Former England cricketer-turned commentator David Lloyd had termed the pitch in the ongoing second Test between India and England at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as an ’embarrassment’, adding that he is eagerly awaiting the International Cricket Council’s reaction on the same.

The talks around the pitch dished out at the Chepauk for the second Test have intensified after England batsmen struggle to cope against the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel on the second day.

After Rohit Sharma’s masterclass in how to play on a raging turner and brilliant half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant led India to a total of 329 in the first innings, the home side tightened their grip on the Test match as they knocked over a hapless English batting-unit for a mere 134.

With England on the verge of losing the  Test match within three days, several former cricketers like Michael Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen have questioned the nature of the pitch, stating that the track is not ideal for Test match cricket.

Former England coach David Lloyd has taken the criticism of the pitch to a whole new level as he has alleged that for starters there isn’t a pitch in Chennai. Speaking to the Daily Mail UK, Lloyd termed the Chepauk track as a lottery, adding that the pitch should be an embarrassment to whoever produced it and to the BCCI.

”It’s important you are impartial as a commentator and to us it really doesn’t matter who wins or loses. You just want a good, even game of cricket. But we’re not seeing that in Chennai. There’s been a lot of talk about the pitch but I can end it right there – there isn’t one!” David Lloyd said.

”It should be an embarrassment to whoever has produced it and to the home board. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy pitches that turn from day one. No problem.  But it has to have a surface. All that’s happened here is someone has put three stumps at both ends and said ‘off you go.’ he added.

”There’s been no preparation – and it’s at the same ground where we saw an excellent pitch for the first Test. I await the ICC’s reaction with interest. It’s a lottery,” reckoned David Lloyd.

Meanwhile, India have tightened the screws on England in the second Test after having swelled their lead to 249 with nine second-innings wickets still in their kitty.
