India vs England 2021: England Should Change Their Mindset; We Don’t Complain About Seaming Wickets Overseas, Says Axar Patel

Indian spin all-rounder Axar Patel has asked the England team to change their mindsets about spinning pitches on the Indian subcontinent, saying that the Chennai pitch is only challenging for bowlers, who don’t hit the right spots on the surface to get wickets.

This came after Axar Patel bagged two out three England wickets to fall in their second innings, as India asked them to chase down 486 runs to win the second Test being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. India made 286 runs in the second innings, with Ravichandran Ashwin making an excellent 106, his 5th Test hundred and first against England and at his home.

England Should Change The Mindset About The Wicket Because We Also Play On Seaming Wickets: Axar Patel

The 27-year-old spinner had made his Test debut in the ongoing match and though he didn’t do much with the bat in both innings, making 5 and 7, he did pick Joe Root as his first Test wicket in the first innings. In the second innings, however, he removed Dom Sibley for 3 and had Jack Leach caught by Rohit Sharma for a first-ball duck.

“The way the wicket is behaving, it’s turning. But it’s only turning when you bowl the right length, the right pace. If you are a little slow, it doesn’t turn a lot. So if you hit the right pace and line, it becomes tough for them to bat. It becomes important for the bowlers to bowl the right pace,” Axar Patel told reporters in a virtual press conference after stumps, day three.

Axar could have very well picked the wicket of Joe Root in the second innings as well, however, DRS review for a caught behind, rendered Root out after the third umpire checked for LBW decision as well, which led to a good argument between the on-field umpire Nitin Menon and India captain Virat Kohli.

“Actually if you look at my last dismissal [Joe Root] one, it was on the umpire, so I can’t say a lot on that. But here on this wicket, I think we played really well, so when we are able to score runs, they shouldn’t have issues. I think they should change the mindset about the wicket because we also play on seaming wickets,” Axar added.

Not Making My Debut In The First Test Was Frustrating: Axar Patel

Axar Patel was supposed to make his Test debut in the first Test in Chennai, but on the morning of day one, he complained of knee pain and was ruled out of the playing XI. Talking about the same, he mentioned that it was frustrating for him to miss out on a debut in Chennai’s first Test.

“I was about to play in the first Test, it was frustrating for me but I never got irritated by it. I just took some time and worked on my fitness, my physio told me that it was a niggle and it would become alright for the second Test. It was frustrating but if you look at it positively, I could give my 100% here. I have played with Ash a lot, his mindset and his bowling to both left and right-handed batsman. He talks a lot about mindset and how I could trouble the batsman with my bowling,” Axar said.
