India vs England 2021: Michael Vaughan Terms The 2nd Test Pitch As A ‘Shocker’; Shane Warne Reacts

Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has lambasted former England captain Michael Vaughan after the latter termed the pitch in the ongoing second Test between India and England at the Chepauk as ‘shocker’

The Chennai pitch has come under heavy criticism from the English fans and its former cricketers like Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen, and David Lloyd due to the excess turn that spinners have got from the first day.

With England capitulating against the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel on the second day, Michael Vaughan took to Twitter to criticize the pitch, stating that it isn’t a track preparer for a five day Test.

“It’s entertaining cricket as things are happening all the time but let’s be honest this Pitch is a shocker .. Not making any excuses as India have been better but this isn’t a Test Match 5 day prepared Pitch … #INDvENG” Vaughan tweeted.

Reacting to Vaughan’s tweet, Shane Warne wrote that unlike the first Test where the pitch absolutely nothing for the first two days before turning into a minefield, the pitch in the current Test has been a turner from ball one, thus taking the toss out of the equation.

Warne further added that England bowled poorly in the first innings and that Rohit Sharma, courtesy of his brilliant 161, showed how to play on this surface.

“The toss was more important to win in the 1st test than this one, as it did nothing the 1st 2 days. Then exploded. This one has been a turner from ball one. Eng should’ve bowled India out for 220. No different between spinning or seaming & Rohit showed how to play on this surface,” said Shane Warne.

The arguement didn’t end here as Michael Vaughan replied by saying that India should have drawn the first Test had they batted anything as they did in the first innings of the ongoing game.

“It didn’t do anywhere near as much for 2 sessions … Spun but not like what it’s doing now … India would have drawn the first Test if they had batted anything like in the 1st innings … This isn’t a good Test match pitch …” Michael Vaughan replied.

To which Shane Warne reminded Vaughan that no one said anything when the pitch started exploding after the 2nd day in the last Test.

He added that India have outbatted and outbowled England in the Test match thus far.

“Come on maaaaaate ! The last few days of the 1st test, the wicket started exploding & no one said a word about the pitch when India had no chance. At least this test it’s been the same for both teams from ball one. Eng bowled poorly & Rohit, Pant and Jinx showed how to bat. There’s no diff between the ball seaming/spinning to much. We always want a fair contest between bat/ball. India have batted & bowled better than Eng in this match – simple. Conditions have been the same for both sides from ball one. But this is excessive & in favor of the ball,” said Shane Warne.

Meanwhile, India have consolidated their position in the second Test. After having taken a first-innings lead of 195 runs by bowling England out fot 134, the home side has swelled it to 249 with nine 2nd innings wickets still in their kitty.
