Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir maintained that Virat Kohli and Steve Smith should not be compared to the likes of Joe Root and Kane Williamson because of the tough conditions they play in. Joe Root broke a unique record as he became the first-ever cricketer to score a double hundred in his 100th Test against India at Chennai in the first Test of four-match series.

Joe Root is in red-hot form and the experts have been in praise of the elegant right-hander who has three consecutive 150-plus scores in his last three Test innings. He has taken England to a great position allowing them to dictate terms in India where the touring nations have generally struggled.

Root has started well in this series and he needs to continue this form throughout if England has to win the series or have any chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final at Lords.

Joe Root and Kane Williamson Play In Possibly The Toughest Conditions, Says Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir has opined that Root and Williamson should not be compared to Kohli and Smith as England and New Zealand are the toughest places to score runs. He added that Australian and Indian pitches tend to become flat making it easy for the batsman. In England and New Zealand, the ball swings and seams a lot and Gambhir has given Root and Williamson credit for scoring consistently in those conditions too.

“You have to realize one thing that someone like Kane Williamson and Joe Root probably play in the toughest of conditions. England is not the easy place to play, with the Duke ball and in English conditions. And, New Zealand equally is not that easy to play when the ball is swinging and seaming. You look at sub-continent conditions, you look at Australian conditions, they tend to go flat. But England never goes flat,” opined Gautam Gambhir in a chat with Cricinfo.

Gambhir Surprised By Root’s Subcontinent Form

Gautam Gambhir has said that Joe Root’s numbers in the subcontinent are unbelievable on the turning tracks in India as well as Sri Lanka. Root has scored more than 600 runs in the last three innings he has played in the amazing subcontinent. Gambhir praised Root for his extraordinary efforts.

“You cannot compare Virat Kohli and Steve Smith to Joe Root or Kane Williamson because of the conditions. But then, look what he (Root) has done in the sub-continent. Imagine if Virat Kohli would have gone to England and New Zealand and got these kinds of runs. It is unbelievable, especially on these turning tracks. He has 600 runs in three Test matches, that too in the subcontinent, where the ball starts spinning from day one. We should not forget what he has done in Sri Lanka,” concluded Gautam Gambhir.
