India vs England 2021: Shubman Gill Should Open With Rohit Sharma Reckons Monty Panesar

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has reckoned that India should start the first Test against England with the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill had an excellent tour of Australia where he amassed 259 runs in 6 innings at an average of almost 52. His knock of 91 in the final test was crucial in India winning the series 2-1 and he will be riding high on confidence after the success in his start to Test cricket.

Rohit Sharma is an established opener for India in Tests now with the way he batted while opening for India against South Africa. He managed to get good starts for India in Australia, but couldn’t go on to get a big score, and will now be looking forward to stamping his authority as the number one test opener for India. Gill and Rohit provided great starts for India while opening and looks like a combination for the future.

“I Will Go With Gill” –  Monty Panesar

Monty Panesar opined that Rohit will play in the first test because of his good run of form in tests and also that he has worked hard on his fitness. Panesar also told about Rohit needing to prove a point as a great Test Cricketer apart from his outstanding one day record. He added that he wants to see Gill play alongside Rohit because of the excitement he provides and his age.

“Rohit Sharma should hundred percent play. His record is great and he is a solid opener. And when he gets going, he is a great player to watch. He’s worked hard on his fitness, he looks fitter. He’s just coming off of a high of a series. He would want to prove a point in India that he’s still a great Test cricketer,” Panesar told Timesofindia.com in an exclusive interview.

“I will go with Gill. Gill should open with Rohit Sharma. Because he’s young. He’s exciting. And it just depends on who’s a better player on red soil. That’s my opinion. Whether India should go for Gill or Agarwal, that’s something Ravi Shastri and the team can decide. But India look like a strong team,” he said.

Plenty Of Fast Bowlers To Choose From

Both teams have the problem of plenty in the fast bowling areas and Monty Panesar has told that India should start with Siraj. India will be missing Shami, Umesh, and Bhuvneshwar due to injury while Ishant and Bumrah will leading the attack alongside the youngsters. Panesar told that India will find it difficult to pick their fast bowlers for the first Test while the spinners pick themselves.

Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami both are very similar bowlers. But I think Mohammed Siraj is fit and in form, and should play. It’s a great problem for India. When they sit at the discussion table, they talk about batsman, spinners but never about fast bowlers. The first thing that they should be talking about is – ‘who are we going to play?’ ‘Who are the fast bowlers we are going to play?’ Because there’s so much to choose from,” Monty Panesar further told TimesofIndia.com.
