IPL 2021: After being unsold in the first round at the IPL 2021 Auctions, Harbhajan Singh was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for his base price of Rs 2 crore. While not many expect him to play a big role in KKR’s IPL 14 campaign, the legendary Indian spinner said he is ready to give more than his 100 percent for the team and see the team lift their 3rd IPL title.

“I am excited to be part of this journey with KKR. They have been champions twice. I will try and do my best and do whatever I can do to make sure they come at the top. It’s a team game we all have to play, we have a big, big competition. We are looking forward to it. From my side, I will go more than 100 percent and do my best to get the right results for KKR,” Harbhajan Singh told Sports Today.

At 40, age is not on his side and not match practice either. Harbhajan Singh last played a competitive cricket match in the IPL 2019. But he recalled Kolkata as his happy hunting ground and said that Kolkata always kept him motivated.

“When we talk about Kolkata, I get goosebumps. Everything about the city takes me back, reminds me of Eden 2001. In Test cricket, I have always taken a 5-wicket haul. Even if I am not in form, if I go to Kolkata, I regain form. That’s the blessings of Kaali Ma and the love from the people,” Harbhajan Singh said ahead of IPL 2021.

“There is some power that keeps me motivated in Kolkata. Thank you for all the support from the Bengali people. I have always said Kolkata is like another home for me,” he added.

Will IPL 2021 be Harbhajan Singh’s last tournament?

However, it could very well be his last IPL as lack of match practice and other endeavours like acting in movies could see him bringing down the curtains on his illustrious career. But he said that till the time he has the urge and feeling, he will continue.

“I have achieved a few things that I had set out to achieve. There are a few things that I want to achieve for my personal satisfaction. I always enjoy playing cricket. Why do we play sport? It gives us satisfaction and joy. I don’t want to miss out on that till the time I am playing. And this is the reason I am still to be on the part and rub my shoulders with 20-year-old guys and see how good I am and what I can do,” Harbhajan said.

“Till the time I have that urge and feeling, I will continue to play. When that doesn’t come, I will say ‘I need to move on and do something else’,” he added.

Harbhajan was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in IPL 2020 when the tournament was held in the UAE but he pulled out at the last minute, citing personal reasons. Before the auctions, he was released by CSK but he did not hang up his boots.

“It’s unfortunate that I could not go to Dubai to play the IPL. But it was the right decision at that point in time. That was the most important thing for me to do. Now, since things are slowly opening up and everyone is more confident about going out because the vaccine is already out, that fear (of the virus) is not there anymore,” Harbhajan Singh told InsideSport in an exclusive interview before the auctions.
