Ishant Sharma Is Bowling A Lot Further: Sunil Gavaskar

Over the last 2-3 years, Ishant Sharma has re-established himself in the Indian team, having made some technical adjustments in his bowling action. After Ishant Sharma bagged his 300th scalp in the longest format, Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the changes that the lanky speedster has made in his bowling action.

Explaining the tweaks that Ishant Sharma has made in his bowling, Sunil Gavaskar explained that the pacer now bowls a lot further on the wicket than he earlier used to. The change in length is what has made him a better wicket-taking bowler in red-ball cricket.

“He’s bowling a lot further. He was earlier on bowling maybe around 18 inches shorter and so, therefore, was going past the outside edge, beating the batsmen. It was all looking very good but in the wickets column he wasn’t actually showing results,” Gavaskar said during the tea interval on Day 4 of the first Test against Chennai.

“Now that he’s started doing that in the last 2-3 years, this the kind of dismissals he gets – LBW, with the ball keeping low. The further you bowl, the more you get the opportunity to make the bowl move in the air or off the pitch.”

Playing his 98th Test for India, Ishant Sharma bagged three more scalps in the second innings to breach the 300-wicket mark. He had earlier claimed two wickets of Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer in the first innings against England at Chepauk.

Over the last three years itself, the lanky pacer has picked 47 wickets in 19 Tests. In comparison, the tall pacer had 172 wickets to his name in 60 Tests in the first 8 years of his career (2010 to 2017). Considering the injury issues he has had of late, the Delhi-born pacer’s figures are truly exceptional.
