ISL 2020-21: Why Naushad Moosa and Khalid Jamil’s appointment could be a watershed moment for Indian coaches- The Indian Super League (ISL 2020-21) is the top-most tier of football in the country. As such, it has a responsibility to be an aspiration as well as has a duty towards the country’s young and talented footballers and coaches.

While the League has provided a decent platform for many youngsters to start and become household names in the country like Chhangte and Brandon Fernandes, the same cannot be said for Indian coaches. Until very recently ISL could not appoint Indians as the organisers would not permit it.

The most notable roles for India’s top coaches like Thangboi Singto came as assistant coaches. Other roles were interim head coaches, like Derrick Perreira and Clifford.

Miranda took control of FC Goa. Similarly this season, after departure of high profile coaches of Bengaluru FC and NorthEast United FC in Carles Cuadrat and Gerard Nus respectively, Naushaad Moosa and Khalid Jamil have been bestowed the responsibility to take the teams forward in the second half of the season.

49 year old Moosa, is a former Indian defender who played for East Bengal, Mahindra United and Mohammedan Sporting besides representing the national side between 1994 and 1998. It was towards the end of his spell at Mohammedan SC when he decided to take up coaching. His coaching career started at the now defunct Mumbai FC, and his first stint at Air India was unremarkable.

After success at Pune FC, he joined Bengaluru FC IN 2017 and until now was the Assistant coach and head coach of the reserve team.

ISL 2021- Khalid Jamil’s appointment as highest paid Indian coach set a new yardstick

Jamil, 43, made Forty-seven appearances for the India national football team. He is currently the Head of Academy of NorthEast United FC. Jamil played for three clubs in India in a 12-year playing career. He subsequently went into football management.

After retiring from playing Jamil went straight into management and started with his last playing club Mumbai F.C. of the I-League in 2009. In the 2017 I-League season, Jamil took over the job of Aizawl FC. Aizawl FC became I League Champions under Khalid Jamil and scripted history, becoming first north-east club to win the I-League.

After winning the league with Aizawl, Jamil joined rival club East Bengal as the head coach during 2017–18 season. East Bengal signed Khalid Jamil as their head coach with a record breaking deal of 1.25 crore, making him the highest paid Indian coach in the history of India’s top tier football league. In January 2019, he was appointed the head coach of Mohun Bagan for the remainder of the season.

On June 2019, he was appointed as Head of Academy and Assistant Coach of NorthEast United FC.

ISL 2021: Moosa-Jamil’s success can pave a new landscape for Indian coaches in ISL

Both these coaches are now at a pedestal where if they do well, they can open the doors and break the glass ceiling for Indian coaches in the ISL. If Moosa manages to take BFC into the top 4 and into the finals, then he has a strong case to continue as the permanent head coach next year.

Similarly if Jamil manages to secure a rare top 4 spot for NEUTD FC, and with his coaching profile, he could be a good shout for the permanent job.

The positions these two gentlemen find themselves in means if they do well, it could be a watershed moment for Indian coaches as the ISL clubs will start looking inwards for potential candidates in the future, which allows for advantages in grassroots and language and communication.
