MUMBAI: Today, Gulki Joshi is happy with the way her career is shaping up. However, what many people don’t know is the dark phase that the actress went through during her initial days in showbiz. She admits that she faced repeated rejections because of her dusky skin tone, but what kept her going was her determination. And after eight long years, the struggle finally seems to be over.

Gulki, who is currently seen in Maddam Sir, says that she is finally receiving ‘fair’ treatment from the industry. She recalls, “It was tough in the beginning. On several occasions, I was called to audition for the lead role, but after seeing me, they would ask me to audition for another character.

Once, when I went to audition for the protagonist’s role, a member of the casting team assumed that I had been called for a minor role — that of domestic help. Main pahunchi thi lead ke liye audition dene aur jis bande ko pata nahi hai, usne bola ki, ‘ Aap shaayad bai ke role ke liye aayi hain’. I have had many such experiences.”

Things seem to be taking a turn for the better now, she says. “My skin tone is my USP now. Our content is becoming more realistic and even filmmakers want desi looks. And that’s not all. The audience has evolved and digital platforms are posing stiff competition to television… na gora na kala, only content and performance matter. So, it isn’t difficult to get roles anymore. After eight years on TV, I feel that I am doing what I have always wanted to do. Finally, talent is superseding everything else,” she shares with a triumphant smile.

The actress admits that she is enjoying exploring her glamorous side in Maddam Sir. “Other than the police costume, which in itself is quite glamorous, I am seen wearing fashionable clothes. As an artiste, I don’t want to restrict myself and I’m happy that I’m finally getting to experiment with a different look. Earlier, I didn’t know what clothes would suit me, I would wear just about anything. Stylists would make me wear any outfit and I would have no inputs. But, that’s slowly changing,” she signs off.
