Panga turns 1: 5 reasons why Kangana Ranaut's film is an ode to dreams & motherhood that'll remain special

A film that came out last year featuring Kangana Ranaut, Jassie Gill, Richa Chadha, Neena Gupta was Panga. Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, the film was the story of Jaya Nigam, a former Kabaddi champion who gives up the sport for a government job and a family life. How Jaya aka Kangana reconnects with her inner fire and love for Kabaddi in an attempt to prove herself to her son is the story of 2020″s film Panga. While the film surely managed to get rave reviews from critics, it got a lukewarm response in theatres.

However, for most fans, the film and performances by Kangana, Jassie, Richa, Yagya Bhasin and Neena managed to leave an impact and impress all. From the relatability factor to the effortless performances by the cast, everything seemed to have made Panga into a beautiful and memorable film for all. Director Ashwiny sure managed to weave her magic with this one too and hence, it left an impact on audiences. Today, as the film completes one year, we decided to take a look at reasons why the Kangana starrer will remain special for fans in years to come.

1.Kangana Ranaut’s terrific performance is an ode to motherhood

With Panga, Kangana didn’t just show her acting prowess. But, also managed to pay a subtle tribute to the sacrifice of all mothers who give up on their dreams for their families. Not just this, she showed them that no matter what their age is, they are never too old to dream and that it’s never too late to chase after one’s heart’s calling. As Jaya Nigam, Kangana managed to connect with all ladies who somehow end up making sacrifices and lose a part of their individuality in course of fulfilling others needs. Once she reconnects with her old love for Kabaddi to prove herself to her son, she realises what she’s been missing and decides to chase after her dream of playing for the nation. In all this, Kangana manages to keep the audience hooked. When she, as Jaya cries, the audience weeps with her, when she wins, viewers cheer for her. All in all, Panga remains special due to the superlative effort by Kangana to transform into a mother who ends up chasing after her dream and in the process, gives hopes to many like her.

2. Jassie Gill, Richa Chadha, Neena Gupta, Yagya Bhasin as brilliant supporting cast

Without a doubt, Jaya’s journey in Panga would have had little impact had it not been for her sweet, caring and understanding husband, Prashant played by debutante Jassie Gill. Jassie managed to bring a sweetness on screen as Kangana aka Jaya’s husband who understands her dreams and even is ok with his wife kicking him in her sleep. His earnest presence sure lends the film an earthiness. Neena Gupta as Jaya’s mom is superlative. She manages to portray how all Indian mothers are in a perfect manner. Her dialogues instantly hit home and remind the audience of what their own mothers keep telling them. Even the little boy Yagya Bhasin, who plays Kangana’s son, manages to light up for screen each time he is shown with hi family and mom. And, among all, Richa Chadha as Jaya’s friend and coach Meenu is the guiding force that helps her friend get back up and take Panga with life all over again. Richa as Meenu manages to hold her own ground and leaves a lasting impact with her nuanced performance as a coach and friend to Jaya aka Kangana.

3. Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s superlative storyline and direction

In many ways, the guiding force behind Panga and the strength of the film is the story of a regular mom going after her dreams even after staying away from a sport for many years. The story penned by Nikhil Mehrohtra and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari with inputs from Nitesh Tiwari is a sweet, beautiful and inspiring tale that meets terrific performers like Kangana, Neena, Richa and Jassie and turns into a memorable masterpiece. Not just this, some of the most beautiful and impactful scenes involving Kangana aka Jaya’s dilemma to chase after her dream or take care of her family have been perfectly directed by Ashwiny. The sync between her and Kangana added another level of charm to the film. Just like her other films Nil Battey Sannata, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Ashwiny brings an earthiness and homely touch to Panga that grounds the film and makes it even more special.

4. The moving tunes by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy

What sits perfectly in a 131 minute film is the soothing and subtle music by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. Tunes like Le Panga, Jugnu, Dil Ne Kaha go very well with the storyline of Jaya and her struggle and hence, leave an impact on the audience. Add to the beautiful tunes, the impactful lyrics of the songs do wonders to elevate the experience of the beautiful film. We get to see Jaya’s training for a comeback with Le Panga and it instantly makes us root for her.

5. The message – it’s never too late to take ‘Panga’ in life

At the end of the 131-minute film, you end up taking home the beautiful message that no matter what happens, do not let norms and society define what you can and cannot do. Through Jaya’s story, Ashwiny reminds all mothers that it is not too late to dare to dream or rather to chase after that one true love of your life. Be it a game you always wanted to play or a hill you wanted to climb or that solo trip you wanted to take, you can do it without worrying what others say or think. It also conveys that one can move mountains with the support of their loved ones. Hence, no matter what happens, always hold onto them. The best part about the film is that it doesn’t thrust the message again and again. Rather, it conveys it subtly and wins you over.
