India pulled off a record stiff chase of 328 to become the first team to outclass Australia at the Gabba in 32 years. The depleted visiting side without key players rode on outstanding knocks from opener Shubman Gill (91), keeper Rishabh Pant (89 not out) and Test specialist mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara (56 off 211 balls) to overhaul the target of 328 with 3 overs to spare on the final day of the series-deciding Test.

Washington Sundar Can’t Express Feeling When Rishabh Pant Hit Winning 4 And When He Was Walking With Indian Flag

Washington Sundar also contributed with 22 crucial runs in the highest successful run chase at the Gabba and was part of a 53-run partnership with Rishabh Pant for the 6th-wicket.

“Rishabh and I have played a lot of cricket since our under 19 days and that helped a lot. He was batting superbly and that helped us take control. When I went in we still needed 50. I knew if we got 25-30 runs they will feel the pressure and we could win. That’s exactly what we did. When Rishabh hit the winning four it was just the best feeling of my life: and when I was walking with the Indian flag at the Gabba it is a feeling I can’t express in words,” the 21-year-old said.

He also gave credit to stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane, vice-captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Ravi Shastri for encouraging the youngsters to express themselves during the series.

“Ravi bhai has always given us confidence and the way Ajinkya captained was superb. Rohit has always helped us all the youngsters and the dressing room was fantastic, all of us were allowed to express ourselves,” Washington Sundar, who debuted alongside pacer T Natarajan in Brisbane, said.

Washington Sundar had played in the T20I series and was initially used as a net bowler by the Test batsmen. He made a surprise debut in the fourth and final Test in Australia and unthinkably went on to become one of the chief architects in what turned out to be one of the most famous Test wins for India.
