Rohit Sharma Should Look At Reining In Aggressive Instinct: Nick Knight

Rohit Sharma, Test opener

Nick Knight, former England opener said Rohit Sharma should look at reining in his aggressive instinct until he gets a big score as a Test opener away from home.

He said Rohit Sharma doesn’t lack skill or ability to do well in overseas Tests but urged him to be in his aggressive self until he gets a big hundred which will boost his confidence.

Rohit Sharma Criticized For Throwing His Wicket Away While Batting On 44

Rohit Sharma was slammed by ex-cricketers and fans after he threw his wicket away while trying to play a big shot while batting on 44 off 74 balls on Day 2 of the 4th Test between India and Australia at the Gabba on Saturday.

Rohit Sharma looked solid and dominated the Australia pace attack but played a loose shot against off-spinner Nathan Lyon. He totaled 78 runs including a fifty in the 3rd Test at Sydney which was his first Test in series for strict 14-day quarantine regulations and because he was recovering from a hamstring injury.

Needing a big hit for his second successive fifty on the tour, Rohit Sharma danced down the wicket and lofted a flighted delivery but he was caught at the mid-wicket region as India lost their 2nd wicket on 60 in 20th over when India were still trailing Australia’s total by 309 runs.

Rohit Sharma’s wicket handed the edge to Australia, who headed to Stumps on a rain-curtailed second day having India at 62 for 2. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were new to the crease before it bucketed down in Brisbane and the 3rd session was washed out.

Nick Knight: Rohit Sharma’s Natural Way Is To Be Aggressive As He Is Still Trying Out A Way To Get A Big Score Away

Before this 44, Rohit Sharma averaged 46.23. He averaged 88.33 in-home Tests and a meagre 27 away playing 35 innings. While he has 6 tons at home, he is yet to score a ton away.

“Numbers are extraordinary. It’s not due to lack of talent or ability or skill. Sometimes when you see a player of immense ability in Test cricket, it’s realizing moments in the game. So when Rohit is on top of his game and confident and scoring runs in unfamiliar conditions, I would say he would pull out of that (shot) or play for one by knocking it.

“But because he is uncomfortable, he is out of comfort zone, he hasn’t had success away from home in Test match cricket,” Nick Knight said during a post-day show on Sony Six while pointing out the big gap between his averages at home and overseas (88.33, 27.58).

“He is still trying to find a way. His natural way is to be aggressive. But sometimes, for him to be really really good in Test match cricket away from home, he might just have to rein that in. He is one of the best one-day cricketers we have seen, he is very comfortable at home Tests. So make that adjustment mentally, nothing technically, but I would love to see him find success. I know I am making it sound so easy but it’s not,” said Nick Knight.

Nick Knight also said he hopes India stick with Rohit Sharma as their Test opener in the near future and not look too much into him not being able to convert his starts into big knocks. He has scores of 26, 52 and 44 so far in the Test series. The vice-captain had joined the squad only for the 3rd Test after recovering from a hamstring injury. Opener Mayank Agarwal will bat in the middle order while opener Shubman Gill was dismissed for 7.
