Sachin Tendulkar Opens Up On England’s Jack Leach

Sachin Tendulkar, ahead of the 1st Test between England and India in Chennai, has compared England’s attack from their series win in 2012 and said that it’s completely different from the current one.

Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has said that the reason behind Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar’s success in India during England’s tour in 2012 was their much quicker pace in bowling, something that he has not seen likes of Jack Leach do often.

Sachin Tendulkar: Monty Panesar Would Really Bowl Fast Unlike Jack Leach

Sachin Tendulkar has compared the Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar duo with the current attack led by left-arm orthodox spinner Jack Leach.

“That (one in 2012) was a different attack, and Graeme Swann was one of the leading spinners in the world back then. Monty, given the style of bowling, he was not one of those bowlers, who believed in tossing up the ball. He was more of a hit the deck bowler. Monty would really bowl fast, so it was completely different and Jack Leach, unlike Monty, I think he is slightly slowish bowler,” Sachin Tendulkar told PTI during an exclusive interaction on Thursday.

Graeme Swann picked 20 wickets averaging 24.75 while Monty Panesar picked 17 wickets averaging 26.82. Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha was the leading wicket-taker along with Graeme Swann while Ravichandran Ashwin also picked 14 scalps. England won the series 2-1 and it was the last time a visiting team beat India in their own turf. Sachin Tendulkar himself played that series but failed as he amassed only 112 runs averaging a pathetic 18.67.

Sachin Tendulkar: Jack Leach Should Vary His Pace

The Chennai wicket is expected to produce enough bounce due to the red soil and the humid conditions, and according to Sachin Tendulkar, the ball could start reversing as early as 15th over and continue till the 60th which mean pacers are going to play a role and reverse swing could be a factor.

“Whatever I have seen, he bowls at that same pace. So if the wicket is offering turn and considerable help, then varying your pace does matter because then batsmen get much lesser time to react, something that Swann and Monty effectively did with us in 2012.

“I think fast bowlers are going to play a big role here, and more so, reverse swing could be a factor. I believe that the ball will reverse from 15th over to 60th over. When the ball reverses, it skids off the surface and there is less reaction time. From 60-80th over, ball can still reverse but due to its softness, the batsmen find more time to adjust off the surface,” he added.

According to the cricketing legend, Jack Leach’s pace is slower and he will need to vary his pace on the Indian tracks that offer turn to be more effective in the subcontinent nation.
