Sunday lockdown imposed in UP, fine up to 10,000 Rs. for violating covid rules

In the curb of frequently rising Covid cases, Uttar Pradesh government has imposed Sunday lockdown in the state. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also ordered new and tougher rules to fight with Covid in the state. People caught without a mask will be fined ₹ 1,000 the first time and ₹ 10,000 in the next. Yogi Adityanath has also ordered a weekly lockdown in India’s most populous state when only essential services and activities will be allowed. This will be a weekly feature, according to officials.

On Thursday, the state also announced that the schools will remain closed till May 15 and also postponed state board exams after reporting the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases. Uttar Pradesh reported 104 deaths and 22,439 fresh cases on Thursday, a record spike for the second day in a row after 20,510 cases on Wednesday. Cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, and Prayagraj are among the worst affected in the state.

The chief minister said that last year, the MLA development fund proved useful in the work related to prevent the spread of the virus.

This year also, according to rules, Rs 1 crore from funds of legislators can be used in COVID management on their recommendation, Adityanath said.
