If we talk of iconic shows, no one can miss out on late Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande’s Pavitra Rishta. The show is a timeless tale of love, middle class values and human bonds. Kushal Zaveri who directed the super hit show is coming up with a new show, Crashh, on ALT Balaji. BollywoodLife caught up with him for a chat. Kushal Zaveri was one of Sushant Singh Rajput’s closest friends from the entertainment industry. The past year has been a tough one for him given the tragic circumstances around the actor’s demise. When we talk about the love that Pavitra Rishta gets even today, Kushal says, “The show was loved even before this tragedy happened. It has immense relatability. Everyone can identify with two people in love and their elders who fight over matters. The milieu was also very relatable. The chawl, trains, Mumbai roads struck a chord with everyone. It connected with the masses. People do not find that connect with larger than life shows. People also identified with the situations the characters went through.”
Sushant Singh Rajput and Kushal Zaveri were very close. He lived with the actor for a year in 2018. “There are so many memories, hundreds of them, hundreds of stories. Sushant and I would do candid shoots in many places where no permission was granted. I did have a hidden camera. There were scenes where Manav is looking out for Archana (Ankita Lokhande) who has gone missing. We did shoot in a road with real people. He would go randomly with Archana’s picture and ask people about her. Now, Sushant had become very famous as Manav and people would identify him. He was so smart that he would show the picture and move to the second person in two seconds flat. So, before people realised what was happening, or that he was Manav, you got the reactions you wanted. So, he was an actor with a very rare presence of mind. I have so many stories that I can write a book,” he says.
After his demise, people have been acquainted with the multi-faceted personality of Sushant. While few knew of his deep interest in astrophysics and philosophy, these became public after his demise. “It is sad, it is ironic. This happens in society. Only after his death, people came to know how special he was, and went crazy. But you cannot control these things. I am happy that I got to spend some time with him closely,” he states.
Kushal Zaveri talks about how finding closure is ‘very difficult’ for his close friends. “It is very difficult. We were not in touch for a year. We did not meet but chatted occasionally on messages. I had been detached for almost 1.5 years. When this news came, it was a sudden shock. We could not believe it. You do not get closure. You have to know that it is not in our control. We will never get closure on why did he take such a step or if he did not do it, what exactly happened to him. It will stay with a question mark. He was always fine. We chatted on June 9 and made plans to meet up. He said that we would work on projects. I had no idea of what he was going through, there was not the slightest of hint that he was troubled,” Kushal concludes.
