“Charged with coaching King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have a much higher purpose. But to attain this fate, Uhtred will need to face down his greatest enemy and endure his best loss.”
EP Marchant explained: “I believe we want to tell the narrative of these separate kingdoms coming together and the way that marriage happens, and also does Uhtred get back to Bebbanburg? Can he get his fantasy? Does he find his heritage?
“And what is his participation in bringing these kingdoms together?”
The series will continue to adapt Cornwell’s Saxon Stories, so we’d expect the fifth season to unpack the events of Warriors of the Storm (book nine) and The Flame Bearer (book 10) given each season has handled roughly two books at a time.
The synopsis for Warriors of the Storm reads as follows: “Uhtred of Bebbanburg… controls northern Mercia in the strongly fortified city of Chester. But forces are rising against him.
“Northmen allied to the Irish, led by the fierce warrior Ragnall Ivarson, are soon joined by the Northumbrians, and their strength might prove overwhelming.
“Regardless of the gathering threat, King Alfred’s son Edward and daughter Æthelflaed, who rule Wessex, Mercia, and East Anglia, are reluctant to move from the safety of the fortifications. But with Uhtred’s girl married into Ivarson’s brother, who can be trusted?”
The synopsis for The Flame Bearer reads: “Uhtred of Bebbanburg, at last, gets the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole out of him so many years back — and which his scheming cousin still occupies.
“But destiny is inexorable and the enemies Uhtred has made and the oaths he’s sworn unite to divert him from his dream of recapturing Bebbanburg and Britain’s precarious peace threatens to become a war of annihilation.”
There are two more books after ten and nine, titled War of the Wolf and Sword of Kings, so if enough people tune in there’s a solid chance that The Last Kingdom will be back for season six.
Cornwell advised Reader’s Digest that”there is a grand strategy” with regards to how long the string will operate,” but that is more or less up to the audiences as to if they like it”.
He added: “From my perspective, there are books so far and I have to start the tenth book.”
But more on that nearer the time…
Talking of Cornwell, what can he think of the show, especially when specific characters have been cut or the story is sped up?
“They have constraints I don’t have and I knew,” he told Reader’s Digest. “I think they did a fantastic job.
“I see it thinking, ‘Why didn’t I cut down the story like that?’ It would have been a shorter damn publication. I loved it.”
