Van Halen Bassist Michael Anthony Says Eddie’s Death Kind Of ‘Bothered’ Him Because They Never Reconciled

Michael Anthony

According to the former bassist for Van Halen, Michael Anthony, Eddie Van Halen‘s death has been a pain point for him because he and the iconic rock guitarist never reconciled before he died late last year. Anthony touched on his regrets while appearing on the podcast, Talkin’ Rock With Meltdown, on the 8th of January.

When the Meltdown host asked him about Van Halen and what his relationship with him was like in the years leading up to his death, Anthony explained that it wasn’t great. Michael said he and Eddie were not on speaking terms, unfortunately.

Anthony went on to say that it “kind of bother(ed)” him because they had some issues that were never buried and put to bed. Anthony claimed he and the other members were even talking about a reunion, which would’ve been great, but it sadly never happened.

Michael, who joined the group back in 1974 right at the beginning, was replaced by Eddie’s son in 2006, Wolfgang. According to Michael, Eddie never revealed just how sick he was. Anthony claimed Eddie was “very private” about his illnesses and didn’t tell a lot of people about it.

As most know, Van Halen passed away on the 6th of October, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. Eddie was just 65-years-old at the time of his death. Sammy Hagar, the frontman who took David Lee Roth’s position after he quit the band, said he and Eddie had reconciled in the months leading up to his passing.

Hagar claimed he and Eddie had been texting each other back and forth ever since they reconciled, in fact, he described it as a “love fest.” Sammy joined the band back in 1985. In December, Hagar said speaking with Eddie wasn’t easy, because he had to do so through their mutual friend, George Lopez.

According to Hagar, he wanted to speak to Eddie and he really made an effort to make it happen. When it finally did, it was like an instant connection, “a beautiful thing,” Hagar revealed. As it was previously reported, Eddie died last year from throat cancer.
