Varun Chakravarthy, the spinner has repeatedly failed to clear the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru while yorker specialist T Natarajan is yet to join the squad due to an apparent “shoulder niggle”.

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy’s failure to clear the fitness test has ruled him out for the T20Is against England while T Natarajan is racing against time to be battle-ready, making him doubtful for at least the early part of India’s five-match T20 series against England starting at Ahmedabad on Friday, 12th March.

Varun Chakravarthy Was Selected After Recovering From A Shoulder Injury But He Failed To Clear The YoYo Test Mark Stipulated For A 2KM Run At Least Twice: BCCI Source

Varun Chakravarthy has repeatedly failed to clear the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru while yorker specialist T Natarajan is suffering from an apparent “shoulder niggle”.

“Varun Chakravarthy was selected because he recovered from the shoulder injury that ruled him out of the Australia series. He did his rehab at the NCA and started throwing normally.”

“However, he has failed to clear the YoYo test mark stipulated for a 2km run at least twice,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The question doing the rounds is why did the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee select such a player, who, after the month of October, hasn’t played even one competitive game for his state Tamil Nadu.

“We can understand he was doing his rehab during Mushtaq Ali (T20 Championship). But then again, he didn’t play a single Vijay Hazare Trophy game. How do you assess his match fitness based on games that he played five months back? I guess Varun Chakravarthy is a lesson for selectors,”  the source added.

“If a player is generally not maintaining the standards set by this Indian team, his bowling alone can’t be a criteria for selection.”

It is learned that Rahul Chahar will be inducted into the squad as he is already in the bio-bubble since the start of the Test series. Rahul Chahar has played a solitary T20I where he picked a wicket back in 2019 against West Indies.

The 29-year-old Varun Chakravarthy will be missing out for a second time on an opportunity for a potential India debut, having been initially picked in the T20I squad for the tour of Australia. He was picked on the back of his IPL 2020 performances for KKR, where he emerged as one of the stand-out uncapped Indian players.

T Natarajan May Miss First Few T20Is Due To Apparent Shoulder Niggle

T Natarajan, the Indian fast bowler, might not be available for the opening T20I against England on March 12 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The speedster made his debut in all three formats in the tour of Australia, but he couldn’t find a place for the four Tests against England. The speedster is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

In the case of T Natarajan, the NCA medical staff is trying to get him fit, or at least the later part of the series. T Natarajan wasn’t initially a part of the Australian tour and was roped in after spinner Varun Chakravarthy sustained an injury. After, initially, having toured Down Under as a net bowler, he played an ODI and Test each, but was a part of all three T20Is where he nailed the Yorkers with precision.

In 3 T20Is, he has 6 wickets averaging 13.83 and in a solitary ODI he has picked 2 scalps averaging 35 and in 1 Test he has 3 wickets averaging 39.66.  T Natarajan has now played one Test, one ODI, and three T20I with a total of 11 wickets in his name.

Meanwhile, spinner all-rounder, Rahul Tewatia is training with the Indian team in Ahmedabad as he awaits his second fitness Test results. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been recalled while Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are the new faces in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming 5 match series in Ahmedabad.
