Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan’s recently released Coolie No. 1 remake, helmed by Director David Dhawan again, has been quite severely panned on social media, leading most to believe that the film was a failure. However, upon digging a little deeper, this doesn’t seem to be the case. To get a clearer idea of what the reality is, we spoke with one of the most reliable industry insiders, film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi, and he painted a completely different picture that’ll make you see the result of Coolie No.1 in a totally different light. Moreover, we also touched upon Varun Dhawan’s upcoming movies, which prompted Akshaye to reveal why the actor’s trajectory is on the up.
Opening up on why Coolie No. 1 probably isn’t the debacle that social media and the OTT-centric audience is claiming it to be, Akshaye Rathi said, “We don’t know the viewership it (Coolie No. 1) had. So, there are so many of these mass entertainers like Race 3 for instance, which was as criticised and ridiculed as Coolie No. 1 and had as bad reviews, but still managed decent numbers. So, the only way to check if the film was a success or failure was to check its box-office which Coolie No. 1 never had and we don’t know what the numbers were in terms of viewership and all, so it’s tough to say if it was a success or debacle for Amazon, but having said that, the films he has lined up are phenomenally impressive in terms of genres.”
“Jug Jugg Jeeyo (produced by Karan Johar; his immediate next) is a good family entertainer, Ekkis (with his Badlapur Director Sriram Raghavan) is an action saga and Bhediya is a horror-comedy (alongside Kriti Sanon; directed by Amar Kaushik of Stree Fame). So, all these films are very interesting, all of them are very theatrical in terms of setup and the way they seem to be shaping up. I’ve always felt Varun is the finest talents we have for the theatrical medium as long as he chooses his scripts correctly, and I think the kind of filmmakers associated with these films that are coming up are very interesting and I’m pretty sure from here he’ll only rise up the ranks and do a fantastic job,” he added.
Coming to reports that Varun Dhawan is diving headlong into his future projects and not going on a honeymoon with Natashah Dalal so as to not affect the schedule and release of his projects, Akshay Rathi continued, “That could be the case, but I’m not too sure. If that’s how dedicated he is to craft and work, then it’s commendable. See, it’s a simple thing, to move a holiday, he just have to figure out his dates, but for these films, it’s also the dates of hundreds of other crew members, cast members, co-actors and all that, and if those things are already set, it won’t be great to fidget around with those dates, so I think that’s commendable and hats off to him as a professional.”
As for Jug Jugg Jeeyo, Bhediya and Ekkis being the chronology of Varun’s upcoming film list, Akshaye Rathi concluded, “I think so, that’s what I understand.”
Well…there you have it — maybe neither is Coolie No. 1 the disaster so many of us were imagining it to be nor is Varun Dhawan’s career hit a major roadblock after all, given the kind of exciting projects he has in his kitty.
