So what is WandaVision, and why is everyone so excited about this limited series? Here’s what we know so far (and we will be avoiding spoilers). You can sign up for Disney Plus at the link below:

What is WandaVision?

This is a nine-part limited TV series starring Elizabeth Olsen, reprising her role from the MCU movies as the magic-based character Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch. It also stars Paul Bettany, who is back as the super-powered android known as Vision. This is the first Marvel TV series that is being produced directly by Marvel Studios, which has made all 23 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios is headed up by Kevin Feige, and according to a new article from EW.com, he’s the one who came up with the basic idea for the series.

Is there a trailer for the series that reveals more of the story?

Yep. The first WandaVision trailer gives us some ideas about the plot of the show. It appears that Wanda and Vision are trapped in an ever-changing family TV sitcom, which evolves from the classic black-and-white TV shows, to more modern series. There are indications that Wanda has used her powers to warp reality around her, and that she’s created some kind of pocket universe. Also, Vision “died” (or seemed to be permanently shut down) at the end of the MCU movie Avengers: Infinity War. So why is he back with his love Wanda?

One interesting thing about the series, according to the EW.com article, is that the show filmed part of the sitcom sequences on a stage, in front of a live audience.

Who else is in WandaVision?

Three more characters that have appeared in other MCU movies are back for WandaVision. One is Monica Rambeau, who first appeared as a child in the 1990s set movie Captain Marvel. In the series, as played by Teyonah Parris, she’s grown up. In the trailer, she’s apparently being thrown in the air at great speed and then landing on the ground in what looks like a military base.

In the Marvel comic book universe, Monica Rambeau is actually a powerful superhero. She can fly and turn into pure energy. She’s had a number of superhero names over the decades, including Captain Marvel, Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum. However, her role in Wandavision is still mostly a mystery.

In addition to Rambeau,  FBI Agent Jimmy Woo, who first appeared in Ant-Man and The Wasp, is back and played again by Randall Park. Also, Kat Dennings, who played the assistant scientist Darcy Lewis in Thor and Thor: The Dark World, will return in the same role in WandaVision. Marvel Studios has not revealed how these two characters will interact with the series.

Kathryn Hahn will also appear in the series. In the trailer, she appears to be something of a nosey neighbor to Wanda and Vision. In the EW.com article, Hahn’s character is named Agnes. The trailer also shows two more unnamed characters, played by Fred Melamed and sitcom veteran Debra Jo Rupp (That 70s Show, Friends).

Who is writing and directing WandaVision?

While Kevin Feige came up with the initial idea for the show, WandaVision’s head writer is Jac Schaeffer, who also co-wrote the scripts for the MCU movies Captain Marvel and the upcoming Black Widow. Matt Shakman, who has directed tons of episodic TV shows (Game of Thrones, The Boys, and many more) will direct all nine episodes of the series.

In addition, the theme song for the show, along with other original songs that will be heard in the series, will be composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who also wrote songs for Frozen.

What is the WandaVision release date?

Disney Plus started showing the series today, January 15, 2021, with the first two episodes. After that, the other seven episodes will be released on a weekly basis, like most of the service’s scripted shows.

What happens after the series ends?

Marvel Studios has already confirmed that Wanda will play a key role in the upcoming MCU sequel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Barring any more Covid-19 delays, that movie is scheduled to be released to theaters on March 22, 2022. It’s likely that WandaVision will help set up the plot for that movie.

Are there more MCU TV shows coming to Disney Plus?

You bet there are. WandaVision is just the tip of the iceberg for Marvel Studios and its plans for Disney Plus TV series.  Six more live-action shows, plus an animated series, will be coming to the service in the coming months.
