Rishabh Pant was preferred as the wicket-keeper batsman over Wriddhiman Saha in the last three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series 2020-21. Pant made the most of the opportunity and smashed two half-centuries – in Sydney and Brisbane – with the second one taking India to a historic win at The Gabba. However, for Saha, it was no big deal to see Pant marching ahead in the pecking order. “I have been hearing these comparisons (between himself and Pant) since 2018. I believe in doing my job and I am not worried about how Pant is batting,” Saha said.

“I don’t want to change my game because of that. It’s up to the team management to decide who will stand behind the stumps,” he told The Times of India in a chat.

Stressing on the need for a specialist wicket-keeper in Test cricket, Saha said, “There are situations when a missed chance can change the result of a match. Wicketkeeping is a specialist job especially in Test cricket.

“I am not claiming to hold on to every catch that comes my way, but this is a specialist position and should remain so,” he added.

Saha managed scores of 9 and 4 in the first Test in Adelaide, where India had to face the ignominy of their lowest Test total of 36 all out and lost the match by eight wickets.

Saha expressed confidence in “making the most of every opportunity I get” when India face England in a four-match Test series starting February 5 in Chennai.

England tour India for four Tests, five T20Is and three ODIs in February and March 2021.
