Several vehicles collide due to dense fog on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway; several injured

Vehicles collide at UP-Haryana border

At least 18 vehicles collided on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway at the UP-Haryana border near Baghpat due to dense fog on the first day of the new year 2021. Due to the accident several people, some with serious injuries were admitted to a hospital in Baghpat. A police vehicle was also among the cars hit due to low visibility.

This comes just over a week after a dozen vehicles suffered a similar accident on the stretch. Baghpat stretch of the expressway is an accident-prone area where road incidents occur frequently.

On December 22, dozens of vehicles including cars, buses and trucks had collided into each other between Singoli Taga and Sharfabad village at Eastern Peripheral Expressway amid dense fog.

As many as 10 people were injured in the accident and they were taken to Ghaziabad hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh woke up to dense fog on New Year’s day on Friday, reducing the visibility to near zero in many areas.

In the national capital New Delhi, the mercury plummeted to 1.1 degrees celsius, the lowest in 15 years.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted the minimum temperature at four degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature at 19 degrees Celsius for the day.

A fresh active Western disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains from January 3 onwards.

It is likely to cause light to moderate, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall or snowfall over the Western Himalayan region during January 3 and 5, according to the weather department.

IMD also said that dense to very dense fog is very likely in some pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during the next two days.
