Virat Kohli Urge Teammates To Focus On Process Irrespective Of Points Table

Virat Kohli urged his teammates to focus on the process on the field and not worry about the outside noise after their 227-run defeat in the 1st Test vs England in Chennai on Tuesday.

Team India captain Virat Kohli is not too bothered about his side’s position on the ICC World Test Championship table despite the team dropping down to 4th position after the 227-run loss against England in Chennai on Tuesday.

England grabbed the top spot on the WTC table after their famous win at Chepauk while India slipped below New Zealand and Australia for the first time in the competition. England bowled out India for 192 in the final innings on Day 5 to successfully defend the target of 420 which they had set on Day 4. England had scored 178 runs in its second innings and 578 runs in the first innings mainly due to Joe Root’s 218, while India made 337.

“We will look at the upcoming games in the same way as we have looked up till now. Nothing changes for us, If suddenly the rules can change when you are in lockdown nothing is in your control at all. The only thing which is in your control is what you do on the field,” said Kohli during the virtual press conference.

This was England’s sixth away Test win in a row and the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. The second Test will also be played in Chennai, starting Saturday.

England now needs just one more win from the remaining 3 Tests to knock India out of the World Test Championship but Virat Kohli is not too worried about the outcome in the 4-Test series and only wants his teammates to give their best on the field.

“So you are not bothered about the table or the things which are going outside. For somethings, there is no logic for something you can have a debate for hours as much as you want. The only thing you can control as the side is playing good cricket and that’s our only focus regardless of who is on top of the table,” Kohli added.

It was India’s first Test loss at Chennai since 1999. It was also only the team’s second test loss at home since 2017 — against Australia at Pune — snapping an unbeaten run in 14 matches.
