Telugu film Uppena, which stars debutants Panja Vaisshnav Tej and Kirthi Shetty, has created history at the box office. The movie has worked wonders in Telugu states and collected over Rs 9 crore on its opening day. Though it has suffered in the overseas market due to the pandemic situation, it has still earned Rs 10.43 crore worldwide.

Uppena now holds the record of becoming the highest grossing film with a new hero in Telugu states. It has also grabbed the second spot after Dear Comrade for two tier stars worldwide.

Filmmaker Milap Zaveri was also mighty impressed with the box office figures of Uppena. He took to Instagram to laud the efforts that went behind the release of the film and also expressed his thought on how the audience is eagerly waiting for the films to release in theatres. “#Uppena a Telugu film creates history by scoring the biggest opening ever for a newcomer! It’s also the highest opening of 2021 in Telegu!!! New hero, new heroine, new director. What are the Big Hindi films still waiting for? Time to release! Audiences are HUNGRY!” he wrote on Instagram.

This year, a handful of big budget films are tentatively scheduled to open within this phase, subject to the Covid situation. April to August is traditionally a hectic phase for the film exhibition business, with summer vacations followed by the festive weekends of Eid and Independence Day, among others.

And one of them is Milap Zaveri’s Satyamev Jayate 2, which is the sequel to John Abraham’s 2018 action hit. The movie is scheduled to clash with Salman Khan’s Radhe in the Eid weekend, with a May 13 release. The film brings back John as vigilante cop Virendra Rathod, who wages war singlehandedly against corruption and misuse of power.
