Thailand Open 2021: Saina Nehwal, HS Prannoy cleared to play on Wednesday after they return false positive for COVID report

Thailand Open 2021:Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy are cleared to compete in Thailand Open 2021 from Wednesday as their positive Covid-19 tests in the third round of mandatory testing done on January 11 turned out to be false.

On Tuesday, the Badminton Association of India sources have told Times of India that Saina and Prannoy’s positive Covid-19 tests in the third round of mandatory testing done on January 11 were false and they should be allowed to open their campaign on Wednesday.

Notably, owing to positive COVID-19 report, Saina was forced to withdraw from the tournament which commenced on Tuesday and a walkover was given to Kisona Selvaduray of Malaysia, who was to play her first-round match of the Thailand Open against Nehwal.

Also, Indian men shuttler HS Prannoy on Tuesday was ruled out of the Thailand Open 2021 after testing positive for COVID-19, but will be back in action on Wednesday.

It was learnt that a high level Thai medical committee examined their report and gave a green signal to them.

“When you contract the virus and later test negative, the dead protein of the virus will remain in the body and that’s why you may test positive though the virus is dead. The same happened in Saina and Prannoy case. Thankfully, they were cleared without much damage. We are yet to get the details but were told that they would be allowed to play,” said a TOI source in the Indian team.

Meanwhile, Saina’s husband and roommate Parupalli Kashyap can also take a sigh of relief as he can open Thailand Open campaign on Wednesday after he was also forced to withdraw from the tournament and was quarantined in his hotel room due to close proximity with Nehwal.

Kashyap also took to social media to question whether Saina would be allowed to play if she returns a negative test.

Notably, Badminton Association of India earlier argued that Saina had followed all protocols and was in quarantine in Thailand after arriving in Bangkok on January 3 for the first of the two Super 1000 tournaments, which marks the return of elite athletes to the BWF tour after the enforced break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in the city. BAI wanted Saina to be retested for Covid-19. The BWF confirmed on Tuesday that all 4 players would be retested.

The four players included two from India, one from Germany, and one from Egypt.
