Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver Medal

Tokyo Olympics: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu gave India its first medal at Tokyo 2020 as she won the Silver Medal in the women’s 49kg category while paddler Manika Batra won her first-round women’s singles match in straight games.

Chanu has become the second Indian to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting. The victory concluded, India’s 21-year long wait for a medal in Olympic weightlifting. 

“I am so happy, I won silver. I tried very hard for gold. But the target to accomplish got a little hard in clean and jerk. I tried to better the Olympic record, but it didn’t happen. I am very happy nevertheless,” said Mirabai after her event.

“I was nervous because the entire country was watching, but I came in thinking I need to give it my best and try and get a medal.”

Appreciating Mirabai Chanu’s victory in the Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This grand sporting event could not have started with a happier start.” India is excited by Mirabai Chanu’s stellar performance. Congratulations to him for winning the silver medal in weightlifting. His success inspires every Indian. 

Meanwhile, badminton player Sai Praneeth lost to Misha Ziberman of Israel in the men’s singles Group Stage. In men’s hockey, India beat New Zealand 3-2 in the Pool A match as they recovered from a bad start early in the match.

Indian women’s hockey team will also be kick-starting their campaign on Day 2. In Archery, India’s Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav lost to South Korea’s An San and Kim Je Deok in the quarterfinal.
