India vs England 2021: For The First Time Since 2012 Chepauk To Open Its Three Stands In The Second Test

The second Test between India and England of the ongoing series will see spectators back in the stadium as the  MA Chidambaram Stadium – also known as Chepauk – in Chennai is set to open its doors for about 15,000 fans.

Another big news, and more so for the people in Chennai, is the three stands – I, J, and K – will also be allowed to accommodate fans for the first time since 2012. On television, especially during the IPL matches, we have seen the three stands at the Chepauk empty.

Those three stands were sealed after the 2011 World Cup due to various issues – only once they were used when India hosted Pakistan in 2012 – it also meant the BCCI decided not to host any match in the 2016 World Cup in Chennai and the IPL 2019 final was moved out of the city.

The three stands have a holding capacity of 4000 each – but since only a certain percentage of the crowd will be allowed, they won’t fill in entirety in the second Test match.

Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) secretary RS Ramasaamy has said that around 15,000 tickets will be sold for the Test match which will commence from February 13th – tickets will be available online only from 9th February.

England post a mammoth first-innings total; India under pressure after losing 4 wickets

On the back of a double hundred from Joe Root – which saw him become England’s third-highest run-scorer – in his 100th Test match, England has posted 578 in their first innings, which lasted for more than 2 days.

India needed its top order to put on big runs, however, the hosts found themselves reeling at 73/4 after lunch. Rohit Sharma was dismissed from a peach from Jofra Archer, while Shubman Gill, who was played his shots confidently, chipped one in the air to James Anderson at mid-on after a breezy 29.

Captain Virat Kohli, who is returning to the side after missing the last three Tests in Australia, was smartly dismissed by Dom Bess for a streaky 48-ball stay scoring 11 runs. Vice-captain, Ajinkya Rahane followed his captain soon into the dressing room via a stunning one-handed catch from Joe Root.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant, with their century partnership, have done well to pull the team out of a hole, but, at the time of writing this report, India is more than 350  runs away from England’s total.
